Lyme disease

In Ontario, the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis), is the only type of tick that can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease. The greatest risk of Lyme disease in Canada occurs where blacklegged ticks are found to carry the Lyme disease-causing agent.

Tick populations are expanding in Canada. Blacklegged ticks have recently been found in Toronto suggesting that these ticks are becoming established here. However, the risk of acquiring Lyme disease in Toronto is believed to be low.
